Between the idea and the reality falls the C-XF

February 2007

With Jaguar seemingly set to return to its innovative design roots, interest in the soon to be launched Jaguar XF saloon is mounting. In fact, even prior to its launch in September, it is already gathering awards, including at the What Car? Car of the Year Awards recognition for being “The Most Exciting Car to be Launched in 2007”.

With things looking so good for Jaguar, let us hope that they really are able to realise the concept; for the danger, as T. S. Eliot noted, is that:

“Between the idea

And the reality

Between the motion

And the act

Falls the shadow"

Is it me, or are the Jaguar design team, in general, and Ian Callum, Jaguar’s Design Director, in particular, never out of the news these days?

They stole the headlines, once again, at the International Motor Show in Detroit where they unveiled the new Jaguar C-XF concept car.  Designed and built in the

Midlands by the same teams that produced the award-winning Jaguar XK sports GT range in 2006 – the C-XF concept is described by Jaguar as “a precursor to cars that will become recognised for their ground-breaking exterior looks and innovative interiors”.

Classic Car Electrics by Martin Thaddeus

The majority of the work explains the logic behind, and workings of, the vital electrical components of our older motor cars.  The text is written in plain English and many of the photographs actually show an E-type, though the book is written for all classic cars.

The introductory sections deal with electrical theory, then a number of chapters delve into the major elements, such as the charging, starter, ignition and lighting systems. Apart from the main components, such as the battery, starter motor and dynamo (and alternator), there are useful chapters on lighting accessories, instruments (and how each works, wires, fuses and switches.

A very usefully, slim book, ideal for if you want to know about how your car ticks or want to get stuck into maintenance without shocking results. If you consider electrics to be something of a black art, this is the book for you.
